Tasmanian Fracking Moratorium Extended to 2025.
Frack Free Tas have received confirmation from Resources minister, Guy Barnett, that it is Hodgman government policy to extend the fracking moratorium across Tasmania until March 2025. YAY!
We commend this five year extension as recognition of concerns communities have with this risky practice. It is inherently incompatible with our clean air, soil, water and the Tasmania brand that enables producers to sell to premium markets.
We thank all who helped get the now-extended moratorium in place, and opposed the Petragas exploration license, including the SE Midlands community, the many volunteers in our inspirational group (and other groups) along with those individuals, farmers, businesses and industry groups who wrote submissions to the 2014 fracking review. Your voices are still being heard, but we still need to keep our eyes open.
Exploration is still allowed under this moratorium, as is fracking for geothermal production. The moratorium policy is also unbounded by any legislation, so can be lifted by any Tasmanian government swayed by the spoils of discovered shale gas (as has happened in the NT).
Frack Free Tas continue to call for a permanent, legislated ban on fracking and other unconventional mining (as in Victoria and many other jurisdictions around the world), as a proper guarantee against this unsafe and unwanted fossil fuel industry.
Thanks for your help.
